Drift House Surf Shop started carrying Roark Revival around three years ago. At the time Cheyne and I just opened our business for the first time and wanted to create a unique Surf Shop that you really couldn’t find anywhere else, to create an experience. We wanted Drift House to reflect who we were and what we believed in, and that meant carrying brands like Roark Revival that people could connect with.
If you haven’t heard of Roark Revival Clothing before, you might ask - ”well what is Roark Revival?" or maybe even "who is Roark?” If you look up the word “Roark”, the first thing that comes up is that Roark in Irish means famous ruler, illustrious, and mighty. You look up “Revival” and two definitions stick out to me. The first is an improvement in the condition or strength of something. The second is an instance of something becoming popular, active, or important again.
I have found that many clothing brands today really don’t mean anything and the quality of the garment is just garbage. People are just trying to sell something without really connecting with their end user.
We are lost in a technology era where expressing yourself with the clothing you wear, connecting with someone with a real conversation, or even taking the time to adventure this earth to see all of God’s creations is just a passed-time. We are so glued to our screens we have forgotten how to be human and how to live.
Roark Revival is about a group of people who set out on adventures to tell their story. Roark sets out every year to explore new territories and to tell their story in all of their clothing. What’s awesome about Roark Revival’s clothing is that every season you get a new adventure, a new story.
“That distant voice deep down in all of us yearning for adventure, urging us to say ‘Fuck it, I’m following my heart. I’m gone.” - Beau Flemister
Roark Revival is on their 15th adventure now. Going to places like Jamaica, Russia, India, British Columbia, Patagonia, and many more. Roark Revivals travels are not curated with this real thought out plan. They seek to leave the guidebooks, gps, leave technology, and embrace the unknown.
“Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind.” - M. Rubin
With every adventure Roark Revival goes on they bring their story back in their clothing for all of us to share, their “Artifacts of Adventure”. You have Roark Revival Tee Shirts from their British Columbia trip like the story of “Cougar Annie”.
Ada Annie Lawson better know as Cougar Annie was a pioneer who settled near the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. Cougar Annie had many husbands in her life - many died and they never really found the true reason for death. She also would take bounties killing cougars to help survive and this is how she earned the name Cougar Annie. By the time she died, she had claimed to have killed 62 cougars and about 80 bears. She was no one to mess with.
Unlike a lot of clothing brands, Roark Revival takes the time to not only tell a story but to provide great garments that fit, feel amazing, and last. If you haven’t tried any Roark Revival clothing before I would highly recommend just finding a place that sells it. Touch it, try it on, I promise you will not be disappointed.
A lot of the clothing that Roark Revival provides has a lot of tech and quality behind the scenes. On all of the adventures that Roark goes on, they have to have clothing that meets all weather and adventure conditions. A lot of research and development is done to make sure that their clothes will make it through the adventure.
I can personally say that Roark Revival is one of my favorite clothing brands for these reasons. I personally struggle sometimes with how immersed in my phone I can become. We can’t go anywhere without them anymore. Always glued to a tv screen, a phone, or a computer.
Roark Revival realizes that we are never really in control of the journey. That sometimes we just have to embrace the unknown, that the adventure is a gamble that doesn’t always pay off, but that's okay. That’s what life is about, right? Experiencing new things, meeting new people, and stepping outside of your comfort zone to see life for all that it's worth.
Don’t wait until “the right time” to go on that adventure or to have “enough money” to do it. Sometimes you just have to move and let the cards fall where they may.
Be like Roark Revival and Drift House Surf Shop and create your own “Artifacts of Adventure”. Be mighty and have courage to step out of your comfort zone. Improve upon your life and make living it important again. Tell your story and create your own Roark Revival!
