Hardies Brings New York Skateboarding to the adidas Adistar Control 5

Hardies has always been closely tied to New York skateboarding. Created by Tyshawn Jones and friends, with Na-Kel Smith part of the crew from its early days, the brand grew out of the same group skating for Supreme, Fucking Awesome, and adidas through the mid-2010s. What started within their circle developed into Hardies Hardware, covering skate hardware, apparel, and projects that carry the crew’s own point of view.

The relationship with adidas goes back years too. Jones and Smith were both part of adidas Skateboarding, appeared in the brand’s Away Days era, and Hardies had already worked with adidas on multiple collections by 2019. This Saturday, that connection continues on a shoe coming from a completely different part of the adidas archive: the Adistar Control 5.

From Running Shoe to Hardies

The Adistar Control 5 originally arrived in 2008 as a technical road-running shoe focused on stability and cushioning. adidas brought the silhouette back in 2026, keeping the open mesh, layered overlays, FORMOTION-era design language, ADIPRENE+ cushioning, and chunky proportions that defined the original.

For the Hardies version, that early-2000s runner gets pulled into the world surrounding the brand. adidas describes the collaboration as a running silhouette reworked with skate-informed details, connecting the technical Adistar shape with Hardies’ roots in New York skateboarding.

It is a different direction from the signature skate shoes usually associated with Tyshawn. Instead of starting with a traditional skate silhouette, Hardies works through one of adidas’ bulky technical runners from the 2000s.

Aurora Ruby / Maroon / Dusky Ink Colorway

The Aurora Ruby, Maroon, and Dusky Ink colorway runs deep reds and burgundy tones across the layered upper, with darker sections breaking up the mesh and overlays. The Adistar Control 5 already has a lot going on through its paneling, mesh, Three Stripes, and technical sole unit, and the mostly tonal palette lets those parts of the shoe stand out through texture rather than a long list of contrasting colors.

Underneath, the shoe keeps the performance pieces that came with the Control 5. The open mesh upper provides ventilation, while ADIPRENE+ cushioning sits in the forefoot. The wider Adistar platform and layered construction keep the shape firmly connected to the late-2000s running shoe it came from.

Hardies and adidas

Hardies and adidas already have history together, so putting the name on the Adistar Control 5 adds another piece to a partnership that has moved through skateboarding, apparel, and footwear for years.
The connection starts with Tyshawn himself. He has been part of adidas Skateboarding since his teenage years, received his first signature adidas shoe in 2019, and became Thrasher’s Skater of the Year in both 2018 and 2022. Hardies grew alongside that career, staying connected to the same New York skate crew that helped define his rise.
